So I'm trying to sell digital art prints. However, there's an issue I came across in my research that I can't help but to put out there. Bottom line is: a lot of artists simply don't don't know how to PRICE THEIR SHIT! Artists make HORRIBLE business decisions the majority of the time. Artists, more than any other person, are COMPLETELY HORRIBLE when it comes to responsibility. I've worked with too many of them to NOT notice this. So the problem is, most artists aren't really focused on the business aspect. When it comes to making art, they're more than content with focusing on their art. While somebody else takes off with the majority of the profits. A lot of artists think that if they hand off their work to a print service that they can simply focus on their art. The problem is that these print services make off with about 90% of the profit. All of the online print services practice this method. Now I understand that not everybody has the hardware to make digital prints on the side of a coffee mug, stationary, But when it comes to tapestries, art portraits, t-shirts and canvases. You might as well buy the damn printer yourself if you want to turn a profit. This is the main problem I have with a lot of artists. No foresight. A lot of artists have absolutely ZERO business sense/model/plan. There is no money being a starving artist that's why they're called STARVING artists! There are very few artists out there who make a comfortable living doing what they love. The vast majority of artists are so scatterbrained that they have no idea how to make money selling their art; Artists will damn-near virtually GIVING AWAY away there aren't based on how they feel. Now don't get me wrong, I understand how artists work by inspiration; You can be inspired by anything at any given moment; When it hits you, it hits you. I get that side of the issue. All i'm saying is be smart enough to get yourself a full time job that pays you well enough for you to pursue your artist passion! Just don't be stupid enough to think that You can be a start-up, make 60K a year, in this current economy, selling D&D fantasy characters from your 3-D printer. You can learn a lot about the digital art business by doing research.
